The argument didn’t begin with shouting.
It began with a number.
A father was prepared to help pay for his daughter’s wedding, expecting to make a generous contribution toward one of the biggest milestones of her life. Then he learned what she had in mind: a destination celebration in New Zealand with a projected price tag of around $200,000.
His reaction was immediate.
He could afford the expense, but he didn’t believe that meant he should automatically agree to it.
What followed turned a wedding budget into a much bigger family conflict involving money, expectations, marriage, and the complicated question of what parents owe their adult children.
For years, he had pictured helping his daughter start married life on a strong financial footing. Paying for part of the wedding felt like an expression of love and a final opportunity to give her something meaningful before she began a new chapter.
But a six-figure destination wedding felt different.
