The moment I read the first line, my hands went numb.
Mom, please don’t panic. We didn’t forget your birthday.
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe. The police officer standing on my porch watched my face carefully.
“What is this?” I whispered.
He glanced toward the end of my driveway. “I think you should finish reading.”
My fingers trembled as I unfolded the paper completely.
