A sudden outbreak of painful, raised red lesions on the face and neck can have many possible causes, including allergic reactions, infections, medication-related reactions, and inflammatory skin conditions.
In one reported medical case, doctors eventually identified the condition as Sweet syndrome, a rare inflammatory disorder that can cause the rapid appearance of tender, red or purple skin lesions.
The patient developed painful, raised lesions that appeared relatively quickly and affected the face and neck. Because the symptoms were unusual and uncomfortable, the patient was referred to a dermatology specialist for further evaluation.
