When a sink is not used for several days, the water in the drain trap can gradually evaporate, particularly in warm or dry conditions. This can sometimes allow unpleasant plumbing odors to enter the room.
A simple precaution some homeowners use is to cover the sink drain before leaving. One easy method involves placing a piece of paper towel over the drain and setting an upside-down glass on top to help keep it in place.
