From ‘Cinderella’ to ‘Hill Street Blues’: Remembering Jon Cypher at 94

Jon Cypher, the veteran actor remembered by generations of television viewers for roles in Hill Street Blues, Major Dad, and the landmark 1957 television production of Cinderella, has died at 94.

Cypher died on August 3, 2026, at his home in Central Point, Oregon. His wife of nearly 40 years, author Carol Rosin, was by his side. His obituary did not disclose a cause of death.

Now, as friends, family and fans remember his extraordinary career, details of the actor’s final wishes have also emerged.

A Quiet Goodbye Beneath the Trees

Cypher was scheduled to be laid to rest on August 11 at the Forest Conservation Burial Ground at Willow-Witt Ranch near Ashland, Oregon.

According to his obituary, the ceremony would reflect his wish to return to nature. Rather than a conventional burial, he would be wrapped in a natural, biodegradable shroud and laid to rest beneath tall trees overlooking a meadow.
