Long before Jim Carrey became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedy stars, his life looked very different from the success audiences would later associate with him.
Behind the energetic performances, blockbuster movies, and enormous paychecks was a young man whose family went through serious financial hardship. Those difficult years became an important part of Carrey’s story and helped shape the determination that eventually carried him into Hollywood.
A Childhood Changed by Financial Trouble
Carrey grew up in Canada as the youngest of four children. His father, Percy Carrey, worked as an accountant and musician and was an important supporter of Jim’s early interest in comedy.
But the family’s circumstances changed dramatically when his father lost his job.
Money became increasingly difficult to manage, and the family struggled to maintain the life they had known. At one stage, they lived in a Volkswagen camper while trying to get back on their feet.
