The room seemed to shrink after the door closed.
My mother sat completely still on the hospital bed.
The doctor remained near the foot of it, while the two security officers stood beside the closed door.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Mom whispered,
“It’s been a long time.”
The doctor looked at her carefully.
