Abigail met Arthur, a 71-year-old widower, in a secondhand bookstore in Melbourne.
They reached for the same detective novel, joked about it, and eventually shared coffee.
One coffee became another.

Above the fireplace hung a painting of a cottage beside a lake, with two pine trees, a crooked dock, and the initials “R.M.” in the corner.
Those were the initials of her late husband, Robert.
More importantly, Abigail knew the painting.

Arthur’s answer stunned her.
“From Robert.”
Arthur explained that he had known Robert long before Abigail ever met him.
As young men, Robert and Arthur had spent nearly a year together in Australia, working at a hotel outside Melbourne, traveling on weekends, playing cards and listening to music.
Robert had painted an early version of the lake scene during that period.
