His twin reacted differently.
Rather than visibly collapsing, he remained still and appeared to stare toward the judge.
The contrast between the two reactions was striking.
But appearances can be difficult to interpret.
A defendant’s facial expression or body language does not, by itself, establish remorse, anger, indifference or innocence.
A person may react emotionally to the length of a sentence, the loss of freedom, the impact on family members or the realization that a legal proceeding has reached a decisive stage.
