Donald Trump’s Greenland remarks have taken a dramatic turn. Sources say the former president has reportedly ordered top generals to draft a plan for a potential Greenland invasion.
Trump has long floated the idea of annexing Greenland, and in recent days, his rhetoric has escalated, raising tensions between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland.
On Friday, Trump warned the U.S. might act “whether they like it or not.” He added, “We’re going to be doing something with Greenland, either the nice way or the more difficult way.”
Danish and Greenlandic officials are taking the threats seriously. Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Denmark’s foreign minister, and Vivian Motzfeldt, Greenland’s, are set to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss next steps. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the situation “a fateful moment.”
“We are at a crossroads,” Frederiksen said. “If the U.S. turns its back on NATO and threatens an ally, everything could stop. The stakes are bigger than what the eye can see.”
Trump addressed Greenland again on Sunday aboard Air Force One. He denied making a formal offer to acquire the territory but stressed urgency.
“Greenland should make the deal,” Trump said. “They don’t want Russia or China taking over. Their defense? Two dog sleds. Meanwhile, Russian and Chinese submarines are all over the place. We’re not going to let that happen.”
