Carol thought it was just another Saturday—errands, a car wash, and a promise of ice cream for her six-year-old son, Jamie. But by the end of the day, her world would unravel, revealing a secret that would change her family forever.

A Seemingly Perfect Day
The day started like any other. Jamie, full of excitement, asked, “Mom, can I get ice cream later?”

“If you’re good at the store,” her husband Rob replied with a playful smile.

Halloween was just weeks away, and Carol had decided to sew Jamie’s costume by hand. Over breakfast, Jamie declared he wanted to be a “friendly ghost.” By the time the family reached the fabric store, everything seemed to be going smoothly. But then, an innocent question from Jamie turned their day—and their lives—upside down.

The Question That Stopped Everything
While Carol browsed fabric, Jamie suddenly darted toward a woman stocking shelves. “Are you my mommy?” he asked.

The saleswoman froze, her face pale as she looked nervously between Jamie and Rob.

“Jamie!” Carol exclaimed, rushing over. “What’s gotten into you? I’m so sorry,” she added, directing an apologetic smile at the woman.

But the woman didn’t respond. Her gaze lingered on Rob, who stood frozen, his face ghostly white.

Suspicion at the Ice Cream Shop
The incident cast a shadow over the rest of the day. At the ice cream shop, Rob avoided Carol’s gaze, his discomfort palpable. Carol’s mind raced with questions. Why would Jamie ask a stranger if she was his mother? And why had Rob reacted so strangely?

Later that night, after Jamie was tucked in bed, Carol gently pressed him for answers.

“Sweetie, why did you ask that lady if she was your mommy?” she asked.
