I’m Nora, and my husband Henry and I have always had a simple routine. We don’t go out often, preferring cozy nights at home with movies and pizza. Both of us work in demanding jobs, and I thought that our low-key evenings were just about enjoying our time together at home, not because of money.
Recently, I celebrated my 40th birthday, and Henry invited me and my parents to a nice restaurant to celebrate. It was a thoughtful gesture, but things took an unexpected turn when the bill arrived. The meal came to $1100, and Henry turned to me with a smile and said, “It’s your birthday, so I thought you’d want to pay.” At first, I thought he was joking, but his expression remained serious.
