By the time I arrived at my daughter Emma’s commissioning ceremony, I was running on little sleep and a lot of determination.
I had spent the night behind the wheel of my freight truck, covering mile after mile because missing that day was never an option. Emma was about to take an oath that would mark the beginning of her military career, and there was nowhere else I wanted to be.
I stepped out of the truck tired, unshaven, and still dressed for the road. None of that mattered.
What mattered was seeing my daughter in uniform.
As I watched her stand among the newly commissioned officers, I felt a mix of pride and disbelief. She carried herself with a confidence that seemed both familiar and entirely new. In that moment, I could still see the little girl who used to sit beside me and ask questions about everything—including the old leather wristband I had worn for as long as she could remember.
Whenever she asked about it, I usually gave the same brief answer.
“It’s from my time in service.”
That explanation was enough most of the time.

A senior officer, General Mercer, noticed the worn leather band around my wrist.
Years of weather, work, and time had left it faded and cracked. To most people, it looked like an old accessory that should have been replaced long ago.
The general saw something else.
He looked directly at me and asked a single question:
“Did you know Sergeant Holloway?”
For a moment, the noise around us seemed to disappear.
The name hit me harder than I expected.
It had been years since I had heard it spoken aloud.
Emma looked from the general to me, clearly confused. She had never heard that name before, and she couldn’t understand why a simple wristband had suddenly become the center of attention.
