The Small Mark on Your Back: What It Is and What It Might Mean

Have you ever noticed two small indentations just above the lower back and wondered what they are? Commonly known as Venus dimples, these natural features have attracted attention for centuries and are often associated with beauty and fitness. Despite the myths surrounding them, the real explanation is rooted in anatomy rather than mystery.

Venus dimples are small indentations located where the pelvis connects to the skin near the base of the spine. In men, they are sometimes referred to as Apollo dimples. These markings are formed by ligaments attaching the skin to the underlying pelvic bone, creating a slight depression in certain individuals.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that these dimples can be developed through exercise or targeted workouts. In reality, they are largely determined by genetics. If your body structure includes the specific ligament placement that creates them, you’ll have them. If not, no amount of exercise can produce them.

That said, body composition can influence how visible they appear. People with lower body fat percentages may have more pronounced Venus dimples simply because there is less tissue covering the underlying anatomy. Weight changes can make them more or less noticeable over time.
