On the evening of October 1, 2017, thousands of people gathered near the Las Vegas Strip to attend a country music festival. What began as an ordinary night of music and entertainment quickly became one of the most devastating mass-casualty events in modern American history.
From a hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on the crowd below. At first, some concertgoers reportedly mistook the sound for fireworks or other activity associated with the event. It soon became clear that something much more serious was happening.
