Society often expects a traditional path: get a good job, find a partner, get married, and start a family. When someone decides differently, they are frequently judged.

But what happens when the people in question do want children, despite facing extraordinary challenges? Over 20 years ago, Patti White from California received news that was both exciting and surprising: her daughter, Lisa, was pregnant.
Lisa has Down syndrome, a chromosomal condition often misunderstood by the public. Many assume people with Down syndrome cannot live independently, work, or even form meaningful relationships—but in reality, many lead full, independent lives. Lisa, 29 at the time, had her own apartment, a full-time job at Goodwill, and had been living on her own for over a decade. She was independent, social, and responsible.

Her relationship with a man who also had Down syndrome was serious—they discussed birth control, safe sex, and long-term plans. Many assumed her pregnancy was impossible; conventional wisdom suggested men with Down syndrome are unlikely to father children. But life had other plans.

When Patti heard the news, her first thought was disbelief. “How could this be?” she recalled thinking. Despite critics labeling Lisa’s decision as irresponsible or selfish, her family stood firmly behind her. Lisa approached her pregnancy like any other mother-to-be—attending childbirth classes, working with a pregnancy coach, and navigating all the usual ups and downs of pregnancy.

Her son, Nic, arrived four weeks early, and like his parents, he has Down syndrome. Though Nic’s father sadly passed away when Nic was just five, Lisa and Patti ensured he grew up surrounded by love, care, and support. Today, Nic is a thriving 24-year-old college graduate, proud of his family and deeply appreciative of the women who raised him.“I have two moms. My mom Lisa gave me life, love, and guidance. She is always wonderful and beautiful,” Nic shared.

Patti, Lisa, and Nic’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience, love, and the extraordinary potential of people with Down syndrome. They’ve challenged stereotypes, inspired countless others, and shown that determination and support can overcome society’s doubts.

Their journey proves that love, courage, and dedication are what truly define a family.
