Others become part of the memories attached to an entire generation. Kiki Shepard was one of those rare figures.

For 15 years, Shepard helped bring the energy of Harlem’s legendary Apollo Theater into homes across America as a co-host of Showtime at the Apollo. From 1987 to 2002, she stood alongside a rotating lineup of entertainers and welcomed performers ranging from aspiring newcomers to internationally recognized stars. Her warmth, confidence, humor, and unmistakable sense of style made her an essential part of the program’s identity.

For countless viewers, Shepard represented something bigger than television. The Apollo stage was famously demanding, but she brought an encouraging presence to a setting where performers had to prove themselves in front of an unpredictable audience. Her ability to make people feel seen helped give the show its distinctive personality.

And her career began long before millions of viewers knew her name.

Born in Tyler, Texas, Shepard developed a passion for performance early in life. She became a professional dancer and later appeared in Broadway productions including Bubbling Brown Sugar, Reggae, and Porgy and Bess. Her television résumé also included appearances on A Different World, Baywatch, NYPD Blue, Everybody Hates Chris, and Grey’s Anatomy.

But perhaps one of the most meaningful chapters of her life happened away from entertainment.

Shepard became a dedicated advocate for people affected by sickle cell disease. In 2006, she founded the KIS Foundation, using her public platform to raise awareness, provide education, and support families connected to the sickle cell community. Organizations dedicated to sickle cell advocacy have remembered her not simply as a celebrity, but as someone who remained committed to the cause throughout her life.

Shepard died unexpectedly in Los Angeles on March 16, 2026, at age 74, after suffering a heart attack. Her passing prompted tributes from the Apollo and many who remembered her influence on entertainment and the community.

Her absence may be felt, but her impact remains visible—in the performers she helped introduce, the audiences she welcomed, and the advocacy work she championed.

Did you grow up watching Kiki Shepard on Showtime at the Apollo?
