A young woman has shared the frightening story of how her first sexual experience ended not with awkward memories, but with heavy bleeding, a hospital stay and a painful lesson about the importance of being physically and emotionally ready.<\/p>\n
She said she was in her late teens when she had sex for the first time with a boy she was dating. Although he had booked a hotel room, she said she had not expected the night to lead to sex and felt nervous before they even arrived.<\/p>\n
Looking back, she believes the situation moved too quickly. She said there was no real foreplay for her, and when penetration happened, she immediately felt a sharp pain and sensed something was wrong.<\/p>\n
Then she noticed the bleeding.<\/p>\n

At first, she tried to manage it with sanitary pads, but the bleeding continued. She described soaking through multiple pads and becoming dizzy, weak and frightened. After calling NHS 111, she was advised to go to a walk-in centre, where staff then sent her to A&E because they did not have the equipment needed to assess what was happening.<\/p>\n
By the time she reached A&E, around an hour and a half after the bleeding began, she had nearly fainted more than once. During the journey, an Uber driver noticed she was unwell and stopped to buy her water and cereal bars, a small act of kindness she said helped her continue the trip.<\/p>\n
She later contacted her best friend, who came to the hospital to support her. At A&E, she was assessed by gynaecologists and nurses. She said being treated by women made her feel slightly more comfortable, although the seriousness of the situation was frightening.<\/p>\n
After an examination, a doctor told her she had tears on both sides of her vaginal wall. She was told the injury could have been caused by penetration that was too rough, or because her body was not physically ready, relaxed or aroused enough.<\/p>\n
To stop the bleeding, medical staff used gauze packing. She said the process was painful and emotionally overwhelming, especially as she was already scared and embarrassed. At one point, she was told that if the bleeding did not stop by the next day, surgery might be needed.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, the bleeding stopped the following day. She remained in hospital for two nights before being discharged.<\/p>\n
Alongside the physical pain, she said she was dealing with intense fear about her family finding out. Growing up in a South Asian household, she said sex had often been framed as forbidden or shameful, and that made it harder for her to ask for help openly.<\/p>\n
Even while she was in hospital, she worried about disappointing her parents. She had told them she was staying at a friend\u2019s house and, after she was discharged, she kept the entire experience from her family.<\/p>\n
She later spoke with friends and found that many had difficult first experiences too. Some said they had been uncomfortable, some said they had cried, and others described pain. For her, those conversations revealed how little honest education and communication many young people receive about sex, comfort and consent.<\/p>\n
Her experience led her to speak out about the importance of better sex education, especially around readiness, communication, arousal and boundaries. She said she had not understood enough about her own body at the time, or how anxiety and lack of preparation could contribute to pain and injury.<\/p>\n
Sexual health professionals generally advise that severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness or ongoing symptoms after sex should be treated seriously and checked by a healthcare provider. In her case, seeking medical care was essential.<\/p>\n
She said she did not have sex again for a year, needing time to recover physically and emotionally. When she eventually did, she described the experience as slower, more comfortable and completely different from what had happened before.<\/p>\n
Now, she says she associates sex with safety, mutual care and positivity rather than fear. Her message to others is simple: do not rush, listen to your body, and do not ignore pain or discomfort just to meet someone else\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n
