The 80-year-old lawmaker, who has represented New Jersey\u2019s 12th Congressional District since 2015, shared the decision in a public statement, emphasizing both pride in her record and commitment to finishing her term strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI made a commitment years ago to always lead the charge on behalf of those I represent,\u201d Coleman said. \u201cI believe I have fulfilled that commitment to the very best of my abilities.\u201d She added that while she won\u2019t be running again, she plans to serve her constituents \u201cstraight through to the last day\u201d of her term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before entering Congress, Coleman spent nearly two decades as a state legislator in New Jersey, building a long career centered on progressive policy and advocacy. She was last re-elected in 2024, winning decisively with more than 61% of the vote. Other longtime lawmakers, including Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, 80, and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, 78, have also confirmed plans to step down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Age and longevity in public office have become recurring topics in Washington, affecting both parties. On the Republican side, Sen.
