For more than 16 years, Sônia Fátima Moura has carried a kind of grief that time has never managed to soften.
Her daughter, Eliza Samudio, disappeared in 2010 and was later declared dead. Although the case resulted in convictions, Eliza’s body was never found. For her mother, that absence has made mourning painfully different from what most families experience.
There was no traditional goodbye. No grave to visit. No final moment of certainty.
And even after more than a decade, Sônia has continued to speak publicly about the emotional weight of losing her daughter and about the unanswered questions that remain.
A Loss Without a Final Goodbye
Eliza’s disappearance became one of Brazil’s most widely followed criminal cases. The investigation ultimately led to the conviction of former goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes, Eliza’s former partner and the father of her son.
But one painful fact never changed: Eliza’s remains were never recovered.
