The Mystery Gets His Attention
Once he returned to the church, his curiosity finally got the better of him.
He opened the Bible and looked up Psalm 129.
As he read the passage, he suddenly understood why the reference had seemed so memorable.
The priest leaned back and laughed.
“So that’s what she meant!”
What had seemed like a mysterious message during the drive turned out to be something much simpler.
The priest had spent the entire journey searching for a deeper meaning when the nun had simply been referring to a passage she had in mind.
A Simple Misunderstanding
The humor of the story comes from the difference between what was said and what the priest assumed was being said.
The nun believed the reference was perfectly clear.
The priest, meanwhile, assumed that the repeated reminder must contain some important message that he was expected to understand.
Neither stopped to clarify.
And because of that, a completely ordinary ride became a small mystery in the priest’s mind.
Only after he returned to the church did he finally discover what the reference meant.
Sometimes, It’s Better to Ask
There is a simple lesson hidden beneath the humor.
When someone says something that seems unusual or confusing, it can be tempting to fill in the missing meaning ourselves.
We make assumptions.
We search for explanations.
Sometimes, we even create a much more complicated answer than necessary.
A simple question—“What do you mean?”—can often save a great deal of unnecessary confusion.
That was essentially what happened to the priest.
The nun repeated the same reference twice, and instead of asking her to explain, he tried to solve the mystery on his own.
By the time he finally looked up Psalm 129, the misunderstanding had already taken on a life of its own.
And when he discovered the explanation, all he could do was laugh.
What began as an ordinary ride to the convent had turned into a funny reminder that communication isn’t only about the words we hear.
It’s also about the meaning we assume those words carry.
Sometimes, the easiest way to solve a mystery is simply to ask the person who started it.
