Clara had imagined her homecoming a hundred different ways.
After four months away on business, she pictured herself unlocking the apartment door, setting down her bags, and filling the kitchen with the smell of a home-cooked meal.
Nothing dramatic.
Just warmth.
Just Julian, her husband, and their son, Leo, sitting around the table the way they used to.
She hadn’t told them she was coming home early.
Part of her wanted the surprise.
On the way back, she had stopped for groceries—vegetables, a piece of meat, and a few small things she knew Julian and Leo liked.
It wasn’t much.
But to Clara, it felt like an offering.
A way of saying, I’m home.
Then she reached the apartment.
And immediately noticed the silence.
No television.
No music.
No footsteps.
Nothing.
She knocked once.
Then again, harder.
Still nothing.
The familiar apartment suddenly felt strangely sealed off from her.
Clara unlocked the door.
And walked inside.

The apartment was almost unnaturally clean.
The floors were spotless. The counters were clear. Nothing appeared out of place.
But instead of making Clara feel comfortable, the tidiness unsettled her.
It didn’t look lived in.
It looked arranged.
She walked down the hallway with the grocery bags still in her hands.
“Julian?”
No answer.
She tried again.
Then she opened the bedroom door.
What she saw stopped her.
Julian was asleep on the bed.
Beside him was Leo.
Their son was curled close to his father, both of them sleeping quietly.
For several seconds, Clara simply stood there.
Her mind raced ahead of what she actually knew.
Then she noticed the clothes on the floor.
And near the doorway sat a pair of women’s shoes.
They weren’t hers.
Suddenly, every detail of the room seemed different.
The clean apartment.
The silence.
The shoes.
The fact that Julian hadn’t answered the door.
The warm dinner Clara had imagined making suddenly felt ridiculous.
“Julian?”
He stirred.
His eyes opened.
When he saw Clara standing there, he didn’t jump up.
He didn’t scramble for an explanation.
He simply stared at her with an exhausted expression.
“You’re home early,” he said.
Those four words made the room feel even colder.
