Biblical Examples and Age Differences
One biblical example sometimes discussed in connection with age is Abraham and Sarah.
In Genesis 17:17, Abraham is described as being 100 years old and Sarah as 90 when God promised that they would have a son. This represents a 10-year age difference between them at that point in the biblical narrative.
Importantly, Scripture does not present their age difference as a problem. The story instead focuses on their faith, their relationship with God, and the covenant God made with Abraham.
This example should not be taken to mean that the Bible recommends a particular age difference. Rather, it illustrates that chronological age is not presented as the central measure of a marriage.
Mary and Joseph: What Scripture Actually Tells Us
Mary and Joseph are another couple frequently mentioned in discussions about age differences.
The Bible does not give their ages, nor does it state how many years separated them. Some later traditions and historical interpretations have proposed that Joseph may have been considerably older than Mary, but these claims are not established by the biblical text.
What the Gospel accounts do emphasize is Joseph’s character and his response to God’s direction. Matthew describes him as a righteous man and records his willingness to follow God’s instructions concerning Mary and Jesus.
Therefore, using Mary and Joseph as proof of a particular age gap would go beyond what Scripture actually says.
What the Bible Emphasizes About Marriage
Although the Bible does not provide a numerical rule for age differences between spouses, it does offer principles that can help people think carefully about marriage.
Shared Faith
For Christians, spiritual compatibility is an important consideration. Paul writes:
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” — 2 Corinthians 6:14
The broader principle is that a person’s faith and values can have a significant influence on married life.
Love and Respect
Biblical teaching places considerable emphasis on how spouses treat one another. Marriage is associated with love, selflessness, faithfulness, and mutual care.
An age difference does not automatically determine whether these qualities are present. A couple with a small age gap can still have serious relationship problems, while a couple with a larger age difference may have a strong and respectful marriage.
Wisdom and Character
Scripture repeatedly emphasizes wisdom, integrity, self-control, and good character. These qualities are more meaningful indicators of a person’s readiness for a healthy relationship than age alone.
At the same time, age can sometimes correspond with differences in life experience, financial circumstances, family responsibilities, or long-term goals. Couples should consider these practical issues honestly rather than assuming that age is either irrelevant or automatically decisive.
Is a Large Age Difference Biblically Wrong?
There is no biblical verse that establishes a maximum or minimum age difference between two adults who marry.
That does not mean that every relationship with an age difference will be healthy. Issues such as unequal power, different expectations, lack of maturity, conflicting goals, or pressure from one partner can create difficulties in any relationship.
For Christians considering marriage, the more useful questions are whether both people are mature enough for the commitment, whether the relationship is characterized by mutual respect and genuine consent, whether their faith and values are compatible, and whether they are prepared to build a life together.
A Balanced Biblical Perspective
The Bible does not give Christians a formula such as “marry someone within a certain number of years.” Its teaching is broader.
Age may be one factor a couple considers, but Scripture gives greater attention to faithfulness, character, wisdom, love, and commitment.
Therefore, a significant age difference should not automatically be labeled either right or wrong on biblical grounds. Each relationship should be considered in light of biblical principles, personal maturity, mutual respect, and the responsibilities that come with marriage.
Ultimately, the Bible’s emphasis is not on counting the years between two people, but on the character and commitment they bring to their relationship.
