Dave thought he was giving his exhausted wife a solution.
On their tenth wedding anniversary, he took her to an elegant restaurant, raised a subject he had apparently been thinking about for some time, and proposed opening their marriage.
His explanation hurt more than the proposal itself.
He told her that she was always tired from caring for their children and managing the household. Perhaps, he suggested, he could have fun with “real women” while she concentrated on the family.
He seemed to believe he was offering her a favor.
She felt as though he had just told her that the woman who had spent years building their family was no longer enough.
Her first reaction was anger. But instead of making a scene, she calmly agreed—with one condition.
If the marriage was going to be open, the rules would apply to both of them.
Dave hesitated.
Then he agreed.
He was confident the arrangement would work in his favor. What he had not considered was what might happen when his wife received the same freedom.
Within Days, His Confidence Started to Fade

Then reality arrived.
He created dating profiles and expected attention to come easily. Instead, conversations stalled. Matches disappeared. Plans failed to materialize.
The experience was far less effortless than he had imagined.
Meanwhile, his wife was still doing the laundry, caring for the children, organizing the household, and carrying the responsibilities she had handled for years.
Even after asking for an open marriage, Dave seemed to assume that her role at home would remain exactly the same.
That became one of the clearest problems in their relationship.
He had imagined freedom for himself without questioning who would continue carrying the responsibilities he wanted to escape.
Then She Made Time for Herself
When she created her own dating profile, something unexpected happened.
People noticed her.
The attention wasn’t necessarily about finding a new relationship. For the first time in years, she was reminded that she existed as a person beyond motherhood, chores, schedules, and exhaustion.
She began taking more time for herself.
She dressed in ways that made her feel confident. She went out. She talked to people who were genuinely interested in what she had to say.
And gradually, she began to see something she had forgotten.
Being busy and being undesirable were never the same thing.
Dave noticed the change too.
His excitement about an open marriage began to disappear.
The Rules Suddenly Felt Different
