I Thought a Flash Drive Had Accidentally Ended Up in My Food—Until I Opened the Files

I washed my hands three times before touching the flash drive again.

It was sitting on the table in front of me, completely ordinary in appearance, yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that it did not belong there. A tiny piece of technology had somehow turned an ordinary moment into something that felt deeply unsettling.

For several minutes, I considered throwing it away.

Maybe that would have been the sensible choice. Forget about it. Walk away. Pretend I had never seen it.

But curiosity has a way of overpowering common sense when something doesn’t make sense.

So I picked it up again.

The first question was obvious: Where had it come from?

I couldn’t explain how it had ended up with my food, and that uncertainty made everything about the situation feel stranger. There was no note, no explanation, and no obvious clue about who might have placed it there.

I connected the drive to my computer.

Inside was a folder with a name that immediately caught my attention: “OPEN ME.”
