White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt recently drew attention to the ongoing debate over presidential media access, arguing that the Trump administration has taken a more open approach to the press than the previous Biden administration.
Speaking at a media event hosted by Axios co-founder Mike Allen, Leavitt discussed recent changes to the White House press pool and defended the administration’s approach to determining which news organizations receive access to the president.
Leavitt argued that the changes were intended to expand opportunities for a wider range of journalists and publications rather than restrict access.
“I don’t view them as restrictions,” Leavitt said, explaining that the administration wanted to provide opportunities for more outlets and voices to participate in presidential coverage.
She pointed to the large number of organizations holding White House press credentials and questioned whether a small number of outlets should consistently occupy limited positions within the presidential press pool.
