My Husband Told My Daughter’s Boyfriend to Leave—Then an Old Photograph Revealed Why
My daughter had never brought a boyfriend home before.
So when eighteen-year-old Maya finally announced that she was bringing someone over, I expected my husband to embarrass her with a few predictable overprotective-dad jokes.
I was wrong.
The moment he saw the boy standing beside her, my husband went completely still.
Then he stood up.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “But you need to leave.”
I thought he was joking.
Then I saw his face.
He wasn’t.
The boy, Evan, looked confused. Maya looked furious.
And I was about to learn that my husband recognized something in that teenager that had nothing to do with his clothes, his tattoos, or his dyed black hair.
It had to do with a secret almost twenty years old.
“Please Tell Dad to Act Normal”
Maya was eighteen and intensely private about her personal life.
She had dated before, but whenever I showed too much curiosity, the conversation usually ended quickly.
So when my phone buzzed while I was making dinner, I was surprised to see a message from her.
Bringing Evan over tonight. Please be nice. I really like him.
I smiled.
A second message arrived.
And please tell Dad to act normal.
I laughed.
Daniel was sitting at the kitchen table repairing a loose cabinet handle.
“Maya says you’re supposed to behave normally tonight.”
He looked up.
“That sounds like a lot of pressure.”
“She’s bringing a boy.”
He immediately stopped working.
“A boy?”
“Daniel.”
“I’m kidding.”
At least, I thought he was.
Then Evan Walked Through the Door
A little after six-thirty, the front door opened.
Maya walked in holding hands with Evan.
He looked nervous.
He was pale and thin, with dyed black hair, dark eyeliner, painted fingernails, several tattoos, black jeans, heavy boots, and an old band shirt.
His style was dramatic.
His manner wasn’t.
He seemed almost painfully shy.
“Mom, Dad, this is Evan.”
“Hi, Evan,” I said.
Daniel said nothing.
He stared at the boy.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Daniel’s expression changed.
He stood so quickly that his chair scraped against the floor.
“No.”
Maya frowned.
“What?”
Daniel looked directly at Evan.
“I think you should leave.”
I laughed nervously.
I assumed this was one of his terrible attempts at humor.
Then I looked at him again.
He wasn’t joking.
“Daniel?”
“I’m sorry,” he said. “But he needs to go.”
Maya tightened her grip on Evan’s hand.
“You haven’t even talked to him!”
“I know.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Daniel had spent years teaching Maya not to judge people by their appearance.
Now he was doing exactly that.
“Daniel, enough.”
He finally looked at me.
“Sarah, please. Just trust me.”
Something in his voice stopped me.
He wasn’t angry.
He looked afraid.
Evan Knew More Than We Realized
Evan had barely spoken.
But he seemed to understand that something was happening.
He looked at Daniel for several seconds.
Then he quietly said:
