My Neighbor Took the Entire Harvest From My Garden—So I Chose a Different Way to Handle the Situation

Twelve Days After My Husband Died, I Caught My Neighbor Taking His Apples—Then She Revealed a Secret From 27 Years Ago

My husband, Daniel, had always treated our apple trees like members of the family.

Every September, he would walk through the garden with pruning shears in his pocket, checking the branches and examining each apple as carefully as if the fruit were giving him instructions.

Our eight-year-old son, Ben, loved following him.

One afternoon, Ben reached for a bright red apple.

“Not that one,” Daniel said.

“But it looks ready.”

“Give it a little twist.”

Ben tried. The apple stayed firmly attached.

“See?” Daniel smiled. “When it’s ready, you won’t have to fight for it.”

I wanted to remember afternoons like that forever.

Daniel had been unusually tired lately. I noticed how often he rested after climbing the ladder and how frequently he rubbed his chest when he thought I wasn’t looking.

He always told me not to worry.

“You’ve been married to me for twenty-seven years,” he joked one afternoon. “You’re terrible at pretending you’re not worried.”

Before I could answer, our neighbor Monica called from the other side of the fence.

“That’s quite a harvest.”

Monica had known Daniel long before I met him. They had grown up around the same people and had dated briefly when they were younger.

I had never been concerned about it. That was ancient history.

That same afternoon, a young man arrived at Monica’s house carrying a toolbox.

“He’s been around quite a bit lately,” I remarked.

“Old house,” Monica replied. “There’s always something to fix.”

The young man waved at Daniel.

Daniel waved back, but then he kept watching him.

“What?”

“Nothing,” Daniel said. “He just reminds me of someone.”

Before I could ask more, Ben called him back toward the trees.

Daniel placed a hand on our son’s shoulder and looked through the branches.

“These trees will keep feeding you even when I’m gone.”
