Some voices do not need to be loud to become unforgettable. Sandy Posey had one of those voices—a warm, emotional sound that could make a simple love song feel deeply personal. When the beloved singer died at 80, she left behind more than a collection of recordings. She left memories woven into the lives of listeners who grew up with her music.
Posey died on July 20, 2024, at her home in Lebanon, Tennessee. Her husband, Wade Cummins, was by her side, according to reports. She had been living with dementia in her later years.
Her musical journey began long before she became a familiar name. Born in Jasper, Alabama, Posey worked as a receptionist at a Memphis recording studio before finding opportunities as a session singer. She eventually contributed backing vocals to recordings by other artists, gaining valuable experience before stepping forward as a solo performer.
Then came 1966.
Posey released “Born a Woman,” a song that quickly established her as a distinctive new voice. The recording sold more than a million copies and earned her two Grammy Award nominations. “Single Girl” followed as another major success, helping make Posey one of the memorable female voices of the era.
