“Dancing in the Street” became far more than another successful single. Over the decades, it has remained one of Motown’s most recognizable recordings, while “Heat Wave” helped establish the Vandellas as major stars. The group ultimately earned a place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
Yet Ashford’s life after Motown was not defined by chasing celebrity. She left the group in the late 1960s and went on to work for Michigan Bell Telephone Company. She occasionally returned for reunions and performances, maintaining a connection with the music and the people who had shared those formative years with her.
Her former bandmate Martha Reeves expressed her grief, remembering Ashford’s importance to the early days of the Vandellas and saying her voice would live on through their recordings.
That may be the most fitting tribute of all. Rosalind Ashford may no longer be here to sing those songs, but every time the opening notes of a classic Vandellas record play, her contribution returns.
