With Donald Trump again discussing U.S. control of Greenland and Russian officials warning about potential strategic consequences, attention has turned toward the Arctic—and toward the possibility that a remote island could become a focal point in a much larger security dispute.

The language surrounding the situation has been striking. One senior Russian lawmaker reportedly described the Greenland dispute in apocalyptic terms, reflecting Moscow’s concern about any expansion of American military capabilities in the Arctic.
