At 56, I became a mother for the first time.

My husband, Harold, and I had spent most of our younger years trying to build a stable life. Children were always something we hoped for, but circumstances never seemed to work in our favor.

By the time we were financially ready, I became seriously ill.

After years of doctors’ appointments and difficult conversations, I eventually learned that having a biological child would no longer be possible.

It took me a long time to accept that.

Harold and I eventually found peace in our quiet life together.

We traveled when we could. We spent evenings cooking dinner, watching old movies, and sitting on the porch talking about everything and nothing.

We had accepted that our family would always be just the two of us.
