Before You Throw Away That Ziploc Bag, Find Out If You Can Reuse It

Standing at the kitchen sink with a reusable plastic bag in your hand, you may find yourself wondering whether it’s actually safe to wash it and use it again—or whether it’s simply time to throw it away.

The answer isn’t always as complicated as it seems.

In many cases, certain food storage bags can be reused, provided they are cleaned properly and remain in good condition. Reusing them can help reduce household waste and save money over time. But the type of food that was stored inside the bag matters enormously.

A bag that held something relatively dry and low-risk, such as bread, crackers, cookies, or washed vegetables, may be a reasonable candidate for reuse. A thorough wash with warm, soapy water can remove leftover food particles and residue. After washing, the bag should be completely dried before being used again.

Air-drying is particularly important because trapped moisture can create an environment where bacteria and mold may grow. Turning the bag inside out, when possible, and placing it somewhere with good airflow can make drying easier.

However, not every plastic bag deserves a second chance.

Extra caution is needed with bags that have held raw meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs. These foods can carry harmful bacteria, and cleaning a thin plastic bag thoroughly enough for safe reuse may be difficult. For that reason, many food-safety experts recommend discarding bags that have come into contact with raw animal products.
