Hidden Beneath the Stormline

Jonathan drove north through sheets of rain that blurred the highway into streaks of silver and black. The stormline had settled over the coast hours earlier, turning the ocean into a restless wall of darkness. Every few miles he checked his mirrors, convinced the same gray SUV was following him. Sometimes it was there. Sometimes it wasn’t. The uncertainty was worse than confirmation.

The coordinates from the latest anonymous message led to an abandoned service road overlooking the cliffs. According to public records, the area had been closed for nearly a decade after a series of unexplained landslides. Yet someone had maintained the access gate. Fresh tire tracks cut through the mud, and the chain hanging from the fence had been recently replaced.

Jonathan parked out of sight and continued on foot.
