Two people were killed and three others were seriously injured Friday afternoon after a vehicle struck pedestrians in Manhattan, leaving authorities to investigate how the driver lost control in one of New York City’s busiest areas.
Police arrested a 61-year-old driver following the crash, according to preliminary information from authorities. Investigators have not yet issued a final determination on what caused the vehicle to leave its path and hit people on the street.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, assisted the injured, secured the area, and began collecting evidence. Roads nearby were temporarily restricted while investigators documented the crash site and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident.
What Investigators Are Reviewing
Authorities are examining several possible factors, including whether the driver may have experienced a medical emergency before the crash. Officials have not confirmed that as the cause, and the investigation remains active.
Investigators are also expected to review available vehicle data, surveillance footage, witness statements, road conditions, and any relevant medical information. In crashes involving pedestrians, those details can be critical in reconstructing the exact sequence of events.
