They Thought My Driveway Was Theirs—Until the Property Records Proved Otherwise
They assumed I would back down.
My new neighbors believed they could pressure me into surrendering the one thing I had spent nearly a decade building my life around. To them, it was just a strip of gravel beside two houses. To me, it was part of my home, my business, and everything I had worked for since becoming an adult.
They badly misjudged the situation.
My name is Nate Brennan. Nine years earlier, I bought a modest house on a corner lot and slowly transformed it into both a comfortable home and a practical base for my landscaping business.
The wide gravel driveway wrapped around the side of the house, giving me enough room to park my work truck, trailer, lawn equipment, and building materials without blocking the street or inconveniencing anyone nearby.
It was never designed to look impressive. It was designed to work.
For years, it did exactly that.
Then Brent and Elise Callaway moved into the house next door.
From the moment they arrived, they seemed determined to redesign everything around them. Their house was repainted, their garden was replaced, and two matching silver SUVs appeared in the driveway.
At first, I had no problem with them. People should be free to improve their homes however they like.
But it quickly became clear that Brent and Elise were not satisfied with changing their own property. They also wanted to control how everyone else lived.
The comments began within weeks.
Brent complained that my truck was too large. Elise made remarks about my trailer being unattractive. During one conversation over the fence, they suggested that commercial equipment made the neighborhood look “unfinished.”
I ignored them.
My business was legal, my equipment was stored properly, and I kept the property clean. Their personal preferences were not my responsibility.
The situation changed one Saturday evening.
I returned home after a long landscaping job and found a black BMW blocking the entrance to my driveway. It belonged to one of Brent’s dinner guests and had been parked at an angle that made it impossible for me to pull in with my trailer.
