If your dog walks up to a visitor and immediately starts sniffing them, it may seem awkward from a human point of view. However, this behavior is not a sign of poor manners or disobedience. For dogs, sniffing is one of the most important ways they explore the world and communicate.
Humans primarily use sight and language to understand their surroundings, but dogs experience much of their environment through their incredible sense of smell. A simple sniff can provide a dog with valuable information about a person, another animal, or a new place.
