The atmosphere inside the courtroom was calm on the surface, with only the gentle sound of rain tapping against the windows. Yet for a young girl named Isla, the experience felt overwhelming. Surrounded by unfamiliar faces and difficult conversations, she sat quietly with an unusual source of reassurance by her side—a trained service dog named Moose.
As legal professionals organized documents and prepared for the hearing, Moose remained close to Isla, lying patiently at her feet. At first glance, he appeared to be little more than a comforting companion. But as the proceedings unfolded, it became clear that his role extended far beyond emotional support.
Court hearings involving children can be especially stressful. Formal settings, serious questions, and high-pressure decisions often make it difficult for young participants to communicate openly. Isla appeared visibly anxious as the hearing began, speaking softly and avoiding eye contact whenever attention shifted toward her.
Each time she was asked a question, however, she instinctively reached down to rest her hand on Moose’s back. The simple gesture seemed to calm her, helping her regain focus before responding.
During one exchange, Moose quietly moved closer and leaned gently against Isla without being prompted. She smiled faintly and explained to those present, “He does that when I’m nervous.”
That brief comment changed the atmosphere in the room.
