When fifteen-year-old Ethan decided to take a DNA test, he expected to discover something interesting about his family history.

Ethan had always been curious about his background.

Who were his ancestors?
Were there relatives he had never heard about?
His best friend, Caleb, was just as curious.
So one weekend, the two teenagers decided to take DNA tests together.

Caleb looked over.
“What?”
Ethan turned the screen toward him.

Or at least, they thought they did.
But the DNA test was suggesting something neither of them had ever considered.
They weren’t just best friends.
They were family.
The boys were confused.
They wondered if the company had made a mistake.
Maybe the test had mixed up their samples.
Maybe there was some other explanation.
But the more they examined the results, the more certain they became.
Something connected their families.
And they needed answers.
Ethan eventually decided to show the results to his mother.
He expected her to be just as confused as he was.
Instead, the moment she saw the report, her expression changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“The DNA test,” Ethan replied. “Caleb took one too.”
She looked at the results again.
Then she became quiet.
Ethan noticed immediately.
“Mom?”
She didn’t answer.
