In the early 20th century, sailors in the U.S. Navy often lived in cramped quarters where traditional closets weren’t exactly an option. Storage space was limited, and keeping uniforms organized could be challenging. The simple fabric loop provided an easy solution. Sailors could hang their shirts from hooks or pegs, helping keep garments off the floor and reducing unnecessary wrinkles.
It was a small idea, but a practical one. Instead of requiring extra storage equipment, the shirt itself became easier to hang and organize.
The design eventually found a new audience far away from naval ships.
