The trouble started in a place that should have felt completely safe: a family’s own backyard. When the homeowner walked around the side of the house, she found her nine-year-old daughter crying near the pool, her son frozen in the shallow end, and an HOA board secretary standing inside the fenced yard with her hand on the child’s swimsuit strap.
The woman, Beverly Haskins, lived three doors away and had served as secretary of the homeowners association. According to the homeowner’s account, Beverly had entered through the side gate without permission and was ordering the children out of the pool. When confronted, she insisted the kids were trespassing.
But they were not in someone else’s yard. They were in their own pool.
That detail did not stop Beverly from taking out her phone and calling 911. She told dispatch there were unsupervised children trespassing in a private pool and claimed the homeowner was becoming aggressive. What she apparently did not account for was the small security camera mounted above the patio door.
