“What am I supposed to be looking at?”
Dr. Salinas pointed toward the image.
“The pregnancy is further along than you apparently believe.”
Diego frowned.
“That doesn’t prove anything.”
“No,” the doctor replied. “It doesn’t.”
Laura’s heart sank.
For one terrifying moment, she thought the doctor was about to confirm Diego’s worst suspicion.
Then Dr. Salinas continued.
“But it does tell us something very important about the timeline.”
Diego’s expression changed.
“What timeline?”
“The pregnancy did not begin two months ago.”
Silence.
Laura slowly lifted herself onto her elbows.
Dr. Salinas looked at the medical records again.
“Based on the measurements, your wife appears to be approximately eleven weeks pregnant.”
Diego blinked.
“That’s impossible.”
Dr. Salinas gave him a measured look.
“Pregnancy dating is not an exact science, but these measurements are consistent with a conception date that predates the procedure you mentioned.”
Diego stopped breathing for a moment.
Paula’s face lost some of its color.
Laura stared at the ceiling.
She had spent weeks being called a liar.
A cheater.
A disgrace.
And now, for the first time, someone with no personal connection to either of them had simply looked at the evidence.
The room suddenly felt very small.
Diego shook his head.
“No. No, that’s not possible.”
“You said the vasectomy happened two months ago,” Dr. Salinas said.
“Yes.”
“Then this pregnancy could have already begun before that procedure.”
Diego looked at Laura.
She didn’t say anything.
He looked back at the monitor.
The confidence that had filled his face since the day Laura told him about the pregnancy was disappearing.
But Dr. Salinas wasn’t finished.
“There is another issue we need to discuss.”
Diego’s eyes narrowed.
“What issue?”
Dr. Salinas glanced at Laura.
“I’d prefer to discuss the medical details with the patient privately.”
“No,” Diego snapped. “I’m the husband.”
Laura finally looked at him.
“You stopped acting like my husband weeks ago.”
The words landed harder than she expected.
Diego opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Paula shifted uncomfortably near the door.
For the first time since she had entered the room, she wasn’t smiling.
Dr. Salinas gently lowered the ultrasound probe and handed Laura a towel.
“The pregnancy appears to be progressing normally based on what I can see today,” she said. “But I would like to review your dates and medical history carefully.”
Laura nodded.
Then Dr. Salinas looked directly at Diego.
“And if you want to understand whether the pregnancy is biologically related to you, the answer cannot be established by assumptions about a vasectomy alone.”
Diego stared at her.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that a vasectomy does not immediately establish sterility. Follow-up testing is required.”
Laura closed her eyes.
She had tried to tell him that.
Again and again.
But he had never listened.
Diego swallowed.
“I had the procedure eight weeks ago.”
“Did you have the required follow-up semen analysis?”
His silence answered the question.
Dr. Salinas raised an eyebrow.
“Mr. Diego?”
“No.”
“Then you did not have confirmation that the procedure had achieved its intended result.”
Diego’s face tightened.
“But the doctor told me it was successful.”
“A surgical procedure and confirmation of its result are not the same thing,” Dr. Salinas explained.
Paula suddenly spoke.
“But if the pregnancy was already eleven weeks along…”
She stopped.
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice became quieter.
“…then the dates matter.”
“Yes,” Dr. Salinas said.
Laura watched Paula’s expression change.
The smugness was gone.
Now there was something else.
Fear.
Diego noticed it too.
“Why are you nervous?” he asked.
Paula looked away.
“I’m not.”
“You just asked about the dates.”
“Because this is complicated.”
Diego stared at her.
“You’ve been saying that for weeks.”
Paula crossed her arms.
“I was trying to help you.”
“Help me do what?”
She didn’t answer.
Dr. Salinas stepped between them.
“This is not the place for an argument.”
Diego ignored her.
“Paula.”
She looked at him.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why do you look terrified?”
Laura’s stomach tightened.
There was something happening between them that she didn’t understand.
Something neither of them wanted to say.
Then Diego’s phone began vibrating.
He pulled it from his pocket.
The screen showed an unknown number.
He ignored it.
It rang again.
He rejected the call.
A message appeared immediately afterward.
Diego read it.
His face went completely still.
Laura noticed.
“What is it?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why did you turn white?”
Diego locked the phone.
“It’s work.”
Dr. Salinas looked at him.
“Perhaps you should step outside and take the call.”
He didn’t move.
Then the phone vibrated again.
This time, Diego looked at the message for several seconds.
His hands began to shake.
Paula noticed.
“What did they say?”
Diego turned toward her.
“You knew?”
Paula’s eyes widened.
“Knew what?”
“You knew about this?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Diego held up the phone.
The message contained only one sentence:
You should have checked the dates before destroying your marriage.
Underneath it was a photograph.
Diego opened the image.
Laura couldn’t see the screen from where she was lying.
But she saw Diego’s face.
And she knew immediately that something had changed.
“Who sent that?” she asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Diego?”
He slowly lowered the phone.
“I don’t know.”
Dr. Salinas looked between them.
“Perhaps we should finish today’s examination and discuss everything else afterward.”
But Diego wasn’t listening anymore.
He was staring at Laura.
Not with anger this time.
With confusion.
Then guilt.
Laura recognized the expression.
It was the look of someone realizing that the story they had been telling themselves might not be true.
For weeks, Diego had built his entire world around one conclusion.
Laura had betrayed him.
The baby wasn’t his.
Paula was the person who understood him.
And leaving Laura had been justified.
Now the timeline was forcing him to question everything.
He took a step toward Laura.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Laura almost laughed.
“Tell you what?”
“That the pregnancy might have started before my surgery.”
“I tried.”
“You should have insisted.”
“I did.”
“You should have—”
“I DID!”
Her voice echoed through the examination room.
Everyone went silent.
Laura’s eyes filled with tears.
“I told you the doctor said the procedure didn’t work immediately. I told you we needed follow-up testing. I told you I didn’t understand how you could be so certain.”
Diego lowered his eyes.
“But you never believed me.”
“I was angry.”
“You were cruel.”
“I thought you cheated.”
“And you left me.”
Diego looked at her.
“I thought I was protecting myself.”
Laura shook her head.
“No. You were protecting the story you wanted to believe.”
Paula suddenly stepped toward the door.
Laura noticed.
“So where are you going?”
Paula froze.
“I need some air.”
“Of course you do.”
Diego turned toward her.
“Paula.”
She didn’t respond.
“Wait.”
She stopped.
Diego’s voice changed.
“Why did you say earlier that this was good for everyone?”
Paula slowly turned around.
“I don’t know.”
“You told me the divorce was the healthiest thing for everyone.”
“I was trying to support you.”
“You encouraged me to leave my wife.”
“You were already leaving.”
“You encouraged me to believe my child wasn’t mine.”
Paula’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to help you move forward.”
“Why?”
She didn’t answer.
Diego took another step.
“Why, Paula?”
She looked at Laura.
Then at Diego.
And finally down at her own hands.
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
She whispered something.
Nobody heard it.
“Say it again.”
Paula swallowed.
“I was afraid you’d find out.”
Laura felt a chill move through her.
“Find out what?”
Paula’s eyes met hers.
And for the first time, Laura saw genuine fear in them.
“I made a mistake.”
Diego’s face hardened.
“What mistake?”
Paula shook her head.
“I can’t explain it here.”
“Then explain it somewhere else.”
“No.”
“Paula.”
She reached for the door.
Diego caught up with her.
Dr. Salinas immediately intervened.
“This is a medical facility. If you have something to discuss, do it outside.”
Paula walked into the hallway.
Diego followed.
Laura remained on the examination table, staring at the ultrasound screen.
The tiny heartbeat continued.
Steady.
Unaware of the chaos surrounding it.
She placed a hand over her stomach.
For the first time in weeks, she felt something other than fear.
She felt a strange sense that the truth was finally beginning to surface.
A few minutes later, Diego returned alone.
His face looked different.
“Where’s Paula?” Laura asked.
“She left.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Laura looked at him.
“You still don’t know?”
Diego sat down in the chair beside the examination table.
He looked exhausted.
Then he pulled out his phone.
“I need to show you something.”
Laura hesitated.
He turned the screen toward her.
It was the photograph from the unknown number.
Laura stared at it.
Her breathing stopped.
It was a photograph of Diego.
But it wasn’t recent.
It had been taken months earlier.
Before the vasectomy.
Before the pregnancy announcement.
Before Paula had supposedly entered the center of their marriage.
In the photograph, Diego was standing outside a hotel.
And he wasn’t alone.
Laura looked closer.
The woman beside him wasn’t Paula.
It was someone Laura recognized immediately.
Someone she had trusted.
Someone who had been present during the months when Diego’s behavior had begun to change.
Laura slowly raised her eyes.
“Who took this?”
Diego shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“And why did they send it to you?”
“I don’t know that either.”
Laura looked back at the photograph.
Then she noticed something in the corner.
A date.
A date that was impossible to ignore.
She whispered it aloud.
Diego looked at her.
“What?”
Laura pointed at the screen.
“That was the night you told me you were working late.”
Diego went silent.
Neither of them spoke.
The ultrasound machine continued its quiet rhythm in the background.
Then Diego’s phone vibrated one more time.
Another message appeared.
This time there was no photograph.
Only seven words:
Ask Paula who the baby’s father really is.
Laura stared at the message.
Diego’s face went pale.
And somewhere outside the examination room, a door slammed shut.
The truth was no longer hiding behind the pregnancy.
It was hiding behind a much bigger secret.
