What Does Nebulasexual Mean? The Identity Helping Some Neurodivergent People Understand Attraction

One term gaining attention in online LGBTQ+ communities is nebulasexual, an identity associated with difficulty identifying or distinguishing sexual attraction because of neurodivergence or intrusive thoughts.

For some people, finding this term can offer a sense of recognition and community. Rather than feeling pressured to fit into a familiar category, they can use language that better reflects their individual experiences.

But what exactly does nebulasexual mean, and how does it relate to autism, ADHD, and other forms of neurodivergence?

What Is Nebulasexuality?

Nebulasexual is a microlabel associated with the broader LGBTQ+ community. It generally describes people who have difficulty determining whether they experience sexual attraction because of neurodivergence or related experiences, including intrusive thoughts.

The term is often associated with the quoisexual umbrella, which includes people who find it difficult to understand, identify, or categorize their experiences of sexual attraction.

The word “nebula” evokes something hazy or difficult to distinguish, reflecting the uncertainty some people experience when trying to interpret their feelings.

For someone who identifies as nebulasexual, the question may not simply be whether they feel attraction. They may also struggle to determine what a particular feeling means or whether it should be understood as sexual attraction, aesthetic appreciation, emotional closeness, or something else.

The label does not mean that everyone who experiences uncertainty about attraction is nebulasexual. Like other identity terms, its meaning is personal, and individuals may use it in different ways.
