What About Safety?

If an outlet seems loose, damaged, unusually warm, discolored, produces a burning smell, or makes crackling or buzzing sounds, don’t assume the solution is simply to rotate or replace it.

Electrical work can present serious hazards. If you’re concerned about an outlet or its wiring, it’s safer to have the installation inspected by a qualified electrician.

And if you’re replacing or modifying a receptacle yourself, always follow the applicable local electrical requirements rather than relying solely on its orientation.
