If a dog suddenly approaches and begins sniffing a person, it can sometimes catch them by surprise. While the behavior may seem unusual from a human perspective, sniffing is a normal and important part of how dogs understand their surroundings.
Dogs experience much of the world through their highly developed sense of smell. Scents can provide information that humans cannot easily detect, helping dogs identify people, other animals, and changes in their environment.
Why Do Dogs Sniff People?
For dogs, sniffing is a way of gathering information. When a dog investigates a person, it may be noticing a variety of scents associated with that individual.
