A devastating highway crash in northern Minas Gerais left nine people dead and several others injured, once again drawing attention to the safety challenges faced by drivers traveling along BR-251.
The collision occurred on the evening of Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m. near kilometer 446 of the highway, close to the rural community of Barrocão in the municipality of Grão Mogol.
According to initial reports, a passenger van and a heavy-haul truck collided head-on. The impact forced both vehicles off the roadway and created difficult conditions for the emergency crews who arrived to help.
The van was carrying workers traveling from the Triângulo Mineiro region toward Ceará. The truck, which was not carrying cargo at the time, was traveling north-to-south after passing through Bahia and heading toward the Montes Claros area.
What followed was a major overnight rescue operation.
