A Prom Invitation Made This Mom Fear the Worst-

I had spent most of my son’s senior year trying not to show him how much I worried. Nathan was smart, gentle, and thoughtful, the kind of teenager teachers praised and neighbors trusted with their broken printers. But none of that made high school any easier for him.

He was 17, quiet by nature, and far more comfortable with a book than a crowded room. His grades were never the problem. His teachers wrote notes about how bright and considerate he was. Still, one comment from a parent-teacher conference stayed with me for months.

His teacher told me he ate lunch alone most days.

I smiled politely in the classroom, thanked her for telling me, and made it all the way to my car before I broke down. The thought of my son sitting by himself in the cafeteria while everyone else laughed and made plans was almost too much to bear.

When I asked Nathan about it later, he shrugged and said he sat with people “sometimes.” I knew better than to push. I also knew there was a difference between choosing solitude and being left out.
