I Sewed My Little Sister’s Graduation Dress—Then a Stranger Revealed Why Someone Had Been Watching Us
At two in the morning, I was still sitting at the kitchen table, trying to finish my little sister Mia’s pink graduation dress.
We had only twenty-three dollars left until payday, so buying the dress she wanted was impossible. Instead, I watched sewing tutorials and made one myself.
It was uneven, but when Mia tried it on, she spun around the kitchen like she was inside a palace.
“Do I look like a princess?” she asked.
“You already are,” I told her.
That morning, I noticed a black sedan parked across the street. I had seen it near our apartment and outside the café where I worked, but I convinced myself it was nothing.
After Mia’s graduation ceremony, a man in a suit approached me.
He said he had handled legal documents for my late parents and handed me a letter written by my mother.
The first line made my stomach drop:
Noah, there is something we protected from you. Now you must protect Mia.
The letter revealed that Mia was not my biological sister. She was my cousin. Her mother, Diane, had surrendered custody years earlier, and my parents had raised Mia as their own.
There was also a protected inheritance waiting for Mia.
My parents feared Diane would return once she learned about the money.
Suddenly, the black sedan made sense.
The next day, an attorney warned me that I needed to file for permanent guardianship immediately.
But Diane moved first.
She filed a custody claim, accusing me of having unstable income, poor housing, and too little time to raise a child. She even hired an investigator to photograph me working late and relying on our elderly neighbor, Rosa, for help.
I had one week to prove I was Mia’s family.
