Pfizer and BioNTech have announced a new development for the 2026–2027 COVID-19 vaccination season: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved their updated COVID-19 vaccine formula, designed to target the XFG variant.
The updated vaccine, known as COMIRNATY XFG, is approved in the United States for adults ages 65 and older, as well as people ages 5 through 64 who have at least one underlying condition that puts them at higher risk of severe COVID-19. Pfizer said shipments would begin immediately.
The European Commission also authorized the XFG-adapted formula in July for use in people ages 6 months and older in the European Union.
Why the Vaccine Was Updated
COVID-19 viruses continue to evolve, which means vaccine formulas can be updated to better match variants circulating at a particular time.
