My daughter Lila had been waiting all morning for her grandmother Beverly to arrive with the “special cake” she promised.

Lila was adopted, but from the moment my husband Caleb and I brought her home, she was completely ours.

Beverly never accepted that.

For years, she made quiet comments about “real grandchildren” and treated Lila like an outsider. We kept hoping she would change.

She didn’t.

At Lila’s eighth birthday party, Beverly arrived carrying a white bakery box tied with a gold ribbon.

“This is just for you,” she told Lila. “Open it so everyone can see.”

More than fifty guests gathered around.

Lila lifted the lid.

There was no cake inside.

Only a note.

It read:

Lila’s smile disappeared.

“Mom?” she whispered.

Beverly stood there smiling, clearly expecting me to lose control.

Instead, I took out my phone and connected it to the outdoor screen.
